BlackRidge Stables LLC was formed to participate in one of Kentucky's signature industries — the thoroughbred horse. Headquartered in Lexington, the heart of "horse country," BlackRidge sits within reach of the farms, bloodstock sales, trainers, and racetracks that define the sport, from historic Keeneland in Lexington to Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, in nearby Louisville.

 

Friends and longtime investors had asked BlackRidge's management about partnering on horses for years. In March 2016, the firm formed its first racing partnership and entered the industry in earnest. That partnership began with an interest in California Chrome, acquired four days before his win in the $10 million Dubai World Cup — the victory that made him North America's all-time leading earner. The 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner and two-time Horse of the Year (2014 and 2016) retired with $14.75 million in career earnings.

 

That spring, BlackRidge acquired an interest in Cathryn Sophia, a three-year-old filly who went on to win the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs. She earned over $1.2 million on the track and sold in November 2016 for $1.4 million.

 

To complement its roster of racehorses, BlackRidge entered breeding in late 2016. The operation is already the breeder of three-time Grade 1 winner Bast and Grade 2 winner Mutasaabeq, and — with a focus on quality and value — has sold multiple mares from its small broodmare band for over $1 million each.

In the years since, BlackRidge has competed at the sport's highest levels. In 2023, the stable partnered to campaign Crimson Advocate to a win in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot — the first American victory at that year's Royal meeting — under trainer George Weaver. And more recently, the team was represented by Vodka With a Twist during the 2024 Breeders' Cup, that year's runner-up in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.​
